"Jake Heggie is one of the best-known American composers of our time. He has already produced notable operas and entertaining art songs.
(…) Heggie's songs do a wonderful job of bringing their texts to life, and tell their stories most expressively. The music is often interesting, sometimes eccentric, and the accompaniments are always transparent. Angelika Kirchschlager's long and busy career is evident in her singing, and her expressive qualities are perfectly suited to the interpretation of these varied and demanding songs. (…) Dutch pianist Maurice Lammerts van Bueren has previously given a number of premières of Heggie's works, and he enters into the spirit of these songs with his lively playing, musicality, and brilliant technique. An important contribution to the Jake Heggie discography!"

"Angelika Kirchschlager has summoned her most honeyed tones for this recording. She is an accomplished story-teller (…) Maurice Lammerts van Bueren's pianism is perfection."
De Volkskrant, september 2015
"This wonderful recording of nineteen songs by Jake Heggie (1961) is a complete delight, both musically and technically. Heggie—most undeservedly—is still relatively little known in this country, but thanks to the efforts of Maurice Lammerts van Bueren (…) I hope that this will soon be fittingly remedied. Both of our performers are clearly very much at home in Heggie's fairy-tale universe. Kirchschlager demonstrates a remarkable versatility in the use of her flexible mezzo-soprano; Lammerts van Bueren makes grateful and virtuosic use of the considerable pianistic opportunities offered by Heggie's writing. Recommended!"
